Green Country offers some of the best cycling in the Midwest. A total of 279 miles of well-maintained paved county trunk roads invites cyclists to explore the countryside and the authentic, unique communities.
In the heart of dairyland, these backroads were originally designed to transport milk from family farms to cheese factories and other dairy processors. So except for the occasional milk truck, or our own version of the “rush hour traffic jam” (a herd of dairy cattle crossing over the road from the pasture to the milking parlor) there is little traffic, causing one visiting cyclist to remark “it is almost like having your own private bike lane!”
Along these roads you don’t see overly developed commercial strips, shopping malls, and heavy industry, but instead acres and acres of agricultural crops, farm animals, and beautiful pastoral settings.
The terrain is a combination of flats and hills—the eastern section of Green County is relatively flat and the western section has some rolling and steeper hills. This allows beginning cyclists to enjoy beautiful flat stretches, experienced cyclists to look for a few hills to challenge themselves, and endurance athletes can seek out training routes to find the climbs they are looking for.
The proliferation of Swiss cuisine, cheese direct from the factory, specialty cheeses incorporated into the menu selections at many local restaurants, old world sausage-making, and beer brewing gives potential guests some wonderfully tasty reasons to visit.
