Monroe Arts Center, 1315 - 11th St.
For the 25th consecutive year, the Monroe Arts Center will sponsor the Wisconsin Regional Arts Program (WRAP) Competition and Exhibit from March 30 through May 11, 2012. A demonstration/lecture, judging and critique by professional artist Carol Dolan will be the focus of the artist workshop day, scheduled on Saturday, May 12 from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM. This event is co-sponsored by the Monroe Arts Center and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Department of Liberal Studies and the Arts.

Artists are invited to participate in the WRAP competitions and workshops held in various regions of Wisconsin throughout the year. This competition is open to all area non-professional artists over the age of 18. Work must be original; no molds or patterns from another artist may be used. Up to two entries per artist are allowed and all media are accepted such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography, sculpture, fiber, metal, glass, wood, prints, pastel, digital, etc.

State Award Winners selected from all 2012 WRAP competitions held throughout the state of Wisconsin will be on display at the University of Wisconsin Madison in September 2012, at which time additional awards and prizes will be given.

New Glarus Hotel, 100 - 6th Ave.
Reception 6 pm, Dinner 7 pm
Award Presentation Honoring 2012 Badger of the Year David Mosher '82

Program: Scott Rankin and Gary Grossen "Wisconsin Cheese 101"

Scott is an expert on the characterization of dairy foods; he studies the chemical reactions and compounds that create the unique taste of cheese and other dairy items. He works closely with dairy processors throughout Wisconsin to solve flavor problems and improve techniques for making dairy products. At Founders' Day, he will teach attendees how to select and enjoy artisanal cheeses.

Gary Grossen has been creating delicious, award-winning cheeses for years at the Babcock Hall Dairy. Recently, his aged Gouda creation earned a silver medal in the Gouda category at the World Championship Cheese Contest -- not an easy feat when competing against the Netherlands. A skilled artisan, Grossen is also a distinguished Master Cheesemaker in Muenster, brick and Cheddar cheeses.  Gary is a native of Green County who learned the art of cheesemaking from his father at the Prairie Hill Cheese Plant south of Twin Grove.

4 Maibaum Event
Turner Hall of Monroe
7 pm
A European tradition of spring will be shared on Friday, May 6 at 7 pm at the Turner Hall of Monroe as part of its Swiss Heritage Series. Following a short Grand Hall concert by the Monroe Swiss Singers, the Männerchor New Glarus and Jodlerklub New Glarus, a Maibaum, or May Tree, will be raised on Turner Hall's front lawn. An ancient custom of primarily Germany, especially Bavaria, and still practiced today, the Maibaum is generally raised on May 1 and is related to signs of spring and marriage.

Following the short concert, there will be a procession from the Grand Hall to Turner Hall's outside south entrance, where, accompanied by the sound of alphorns, the 20-foot tree will be raised by woodsman Richard Horn of Brooklyn, WI, and his crew. Decorated with Swiss canton shield flags, the Maibaum will remain in place through the summer months. The event is open to the public; a free-will donation will be accepted.

26 Breakfast on the Farm
Elmer Farm, W6408 Cty. H, New Glarus
6 - 10 AM
Sponsored by Green County Ag Chest - Farm breakfast, farm tours, hay wagon rides, arts and crafts show, "corn boxes" for the kids. The first dairy breakfast was held at the Juda Church in 1961. Breakfast On The Farm started as an idea of Green County Ag Chest enthusiasts at a meeting on November 12, 1979. The idea was to move the breakfasts away from schools and churches to a direct "on-the-farm site". On the farm, visitors could get first -hand knowledge of what makes up a modern dairy farm today. The success has grown to where we expect 5,000 people to attend the event. We will use approximately 1,800 dozen eggs, 1,300 pounds of sausage, 5,000 half-pints of milk, 126 gallons of ice cream mix, 3,500 cartons of orange juice, 200 coffee cakes, 13 lugs of fresh strawberries, 110 pounds of butter, 480 pounds of cheese, and 26 jars of coffee.
